- Lessons learned are a critical component of organizational process assets. When they are not captured, the organization loses valuable knowledge about what worked well and what did not, making it more likely that future projects will repeat the same mistakes. While lessons learned should be captured throughout the project (not just at closing), failing to document them at all represents a significant loss to the organization. The project does not need to be reopened, but the PM should capture what is still remembered as soon as possible.
