The Role of SAML: SAML is an XML-based open standard used specifically for exchanging authentication and authorization data between an Identity Provider (IdP) (like Okta, Azure AD, or Ping Identity) and a Service Provider (SP) (the cloud-based accounting software). How it Works: When a finance user logs into the accounting software, the software redirects the user to the company's IdP. Once the user authenticates successfully at the IdP, a secure SAML token ("assertion") is sent back to the cloud software, logging the user in seamlessly without them ever typing their password into the vendor's site.
