- Risk transfer shifts the financial impact of a risk to a third party. In construction, common transfer mechanisms include purchasing insurance policies (for property damage, liability), requiring performance bonds and payment bonds, including indemnification clauses in contracts, and using contract terms to allocate specific risks to parties best able to manage them. Note that risk transfer shifts financial impact but does not eliminate the risk itself.
