  - The OPTIMIZE command compacts small files into larger, optimally-sized files (typically 128MB by default). This reduces the number of files Spark needs to read, improving query performance. While VACUUM removes old versions, it doesn't address the small file problem. Increasing cluster size helps but doesn't solve the root cause. OPTIMIZE is the standard solution for file compaction in Delta Lake.
