- Managed (internal) tables store data in the warehouse directory managed by Databricks. When you DROP a managed table, both metadata and data are deleted. External tables reference data stored in external locations (S3, ADLS). Dropping an external table only removes metadata; the data remains. Use external tables when data needs to persist independently or be shared across systems.
