- A PMO is an organizational structure that standardizes project-related governance processes and facilitates the sharing of resources, methodologies, tools, and techniques. PMOs can range from providing support (supportive PMO) to controlling project practices (controlling PMO) to directly managing projects (directive PMO). The PMO is not a physical space, not a temporary team, and not the funding approval board. PMOs provide consistency across projects and serve as a repository of best practices and lessons learned.
