A Southbound APIs are used to enable communication between the SDN controller and the network elements (such as switches, routers, etc.) in the network. The SDN controller uses these APIs to send commands and configuration instructions to the network elements, and to receive status and other information from them. This allows the SDN controller to centrally control and manage the network elements, and to dynamically adjust the network's behavior in response to changing conditions.
