In SD-Access wireless, the fabric overlay is where endpoints (wired or wireless) reside. Wireless clients join the overlay because they need to be part of the virtualized network that uses VXLAN and LISP for segmentation and policy. Access Points (APs) and Wireless LAN Controllers (WLCs) are part of the fabric underlay because they provide basic IP connectivity and transport for the overlay traffic. They do not participate in VXLAN encapsulation for user traffic; they simply forward it.
In an SD-Access deployment, the network operates on a fabric-based architecture where both wired and wireless networks are integrated into the same fabric. The APs are fabric-enabled and communicate with the fabric control plane (such as the Cisco DNA Center or Cisco vManage) to allow seamless mobility, segmentation, and policy enforcement across the entire network.
