What does * * * mean? In traceroute output, an asterisk (*) indicates no response was received for that probe within the timeout period. So, three asterisks mean: All three probe packets sent to that hop timed out The device did not reply (possibly due to firewall rules, ICMP being blocked, or the host being unreachable at that moment)
Probe Timeout: Refers to the time traceroute waits for a single probe (ICMP, UDP, or TCP packet) to receive a response. Timeout (Overall Timeout):Refers to the overall time traceroute waits to complete the trace or the maximum time allowed for the process to continue.
Yes, the probe did time out here, so that answer isn't wrong, but the screenshot is bugging me. If it timed out, it should not also show an IP address. It should continue past hop 3 with more timeouts without showing the responding IP address.I haven't tested it, but I'm wondering if it would indicate traceroutes aren't allowed, or the server was busy.
