Your application always has a baseline workload that runs constantly. For that part, you should use Committed Use Discounts (CUDs), because it’s predictable and will save you a lot of money. The spikes in workload happen only sometimes, so it’s better to handle them with on-demand or autoscaling resources. Buying commitments for spikes would waste money since they don’t always happen. Sustained use discounts are good but don’t give as much savings as CUDs. Preemptible VMs are cheap but can be stopped anytime, so they’re not reliable for long image-processing jobs.
CUDs for baseline
its A CUDs for baseline + autoscaling for spikes is Google’s recommended cost-control pattern for spiky workloads.
