- A phase gate (also called a stage gate, kill point, or phase review) is a checkpoint at the end of a phase where a decision is made about the project future. If the project does not pass the phase gate, it can be terminated, the phase can be repeated with corrective actions, or the project may continue with modifications. The decision is not automatic and does not necessarily involve replacing the project manager or simply reducing the budget. Phase gates provide governance control over project progression.
